Playing God

Since we have addressed the issue of abortion in another article, I feel we really must present some sort of insight as to the potential for our government to play god in health care, yet again.  Hospitals are gaining entirely too much power over individual's rights in their role as sanctuaries to honor gods of education and pharmacology.  Judge R. H. Wallace, Jr. appears to see the error of these two systems uniting against a grieving family.

A family has been fighting to have a young woman removed from life support for nearly two months.  This young woman has not been declared dead, but she has been assessed as brain dead.  Her body is serving as an incubator for an unborn child.  Both the husband and the woman's parents have petitioned the court to order the hospital to allow their wife / daughter to die and be buried with some sort of dignity, but until now, the hospital has prevailed.

This case is not a right to life issue.  This case is not a pro-life issue, and this case is not like Terri Schaivo.  This situation is straight out of sci-fi horror.  The woman was found unconscious in November.  At that time she was 14 weeks along in a pregnancy.  She has never awakened, and no one knows how long she was unconscious.  Her breathing has been artificially sustained on life support for two months now, under the guise of causing the fetus to become viable.

If this woman had been allowed the dignity of a natural death, cause known or not known, the unborn baby would also have died, naturally.  Forty years ago, a pregnancy could not be confirmed until a second period had been missed, meaning the fetus would have been about 6 to 8 weeks along before it's existence was even confirmed.  Now that pregnancy can be confirmed within days, we, as a society have taken this knowledge to a new level and decided to "be as gods."  When that young woman died, the child she was carrying was not viable outside the womb.  It was not a choice the family made, this situation didn't offer a choice.  The hospital and government have chosen to play god for two months.

The choice to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is called abortion.  The acceptance of things outside of our control is called integrity.  An offer to ease pain is called compassion. The power to take people's choice and dignity is called tyranny.  The attempt to control life and death, especially utilizing unnatural means, is called rebellion against our Creator.
